The majority of people today associate healthy eating and losing weight with deprivation of the foods they love. In fact, this is what most people dwell on when they begin dieting – what they aren’t supposed to eat. However, why not try something different and change your way of thinking? Think about what you can eat instead of what you shouldn’t.
Anyone can go on a diet and lose a few extra pounds if they have will power, but not everyone can keep their weight off. To do this, one has to change his or her eating habits. Therefore, if you want to lose weight (and keep it off) begin focusing on the things you can eat. Below are some of the foods you should focus on when trying to change your eating habits.
Foods with Whole Grains – Yes, it is good to begin buying whole wheat bread instead of white bread, but this is not where you stop. There are a ton of more foods with whole grains out there. So, start experimenting with them and begin adding them to your weekly meals. Some easy ones to start with include: Brown Rice, Millet, Quinoa, Wheat Berries and Basmati Brown Rice (tastes a bit like popcorn).
You may find it a fun challenge to add these whole grains to your diet and can start by adding them to homemade muffins, casseroles and breads. You can even use them as seasonings on your favorite foods or blend them into soups!
Various Meats and Fish – While your diet probably contains meats already, it’s time to add more healthy meats to it. The first step is to begin purchasing lean meats such as chicken and turkey, and fish. When shopping for beef, purchase the leaner cuts of it. You can prepare many delightful meals with lean meats. For example, who doesn’t like fajitas, grilled chicken breasts or shish kabobs?
You can also do a number of things with fish, as well. You can grill it, bake it and even broil it! Plus, there are many healthy spices and sauces that can be added to fish as well.
Fruits and Veggies – As you probably have heard, fruits and veggies are always important foods to add to your diet. You can eat them raw or cooked, but a healthy combination of the two is recommended. An easy way to incorporate more fruits and veggies into your daily diet is to add one fruit and one veggie with each meal. This will help you weed out the unhealthier food choices you normally make.
There are also a lot of uncommon vegetables that you may find good once you try them. These include, but are not limited to, fennel, fresh beets, celery root, leeks and jicama. A few lesser-known fruits include star fruit, papayas, various melons and kumquats.
Beans and Legumes – By eating beans and legumes, you’ll be adding more protein to your diet, which is a great habit to start. Additionally, beans are high in fiber, low in fat and contain many important nutrients. Beans and legumes can be used to make flavorful spreads, bean dips and casseroles. They can even be baked and boiled too! Snap peas are great in stir-fries while green beans taste great steamed and tossed with spices and herbs.
Once you begin incorporating all of the healthy foods listed above into your daily diet, you’ll most likely forget about all of the unhealthy foods you used to enjoy!
